Although it started with merely sending "advisors" to Vietnam to make sure the country was merging peacefully and effectively, there was much unrest between North and South Vietnam. The US, obviously supporting South Vietnam and their democratic views, sent in more and more troops to ensure safety and satisfaction in the south. With all the disagreement, and uncertainty between the north and the south, fights and attacks soon broke out, and led to war. With the jungle terrain and being on new territory, the US obtained many casualties. The Vietnam war is still considered one of the few US "losses" or "failures" to this day.
