Women rights were a very large part of the Sixties. With all the revolution and change taking place, Women were ready to take their place in society. By the 1960's, there were many different women's rights organizations fighting for their rights. with rallies and marches all over the country, the movement was not missed.
Politics
In 1960, John F. Kennedy promised something called the "New Frontier". Similar to the New Deal, the New Frontier was a series of laws that were put in place to eliminate inequality and injustice. In 1964, President Kennedy was assassinated, leaving Lyndon B. Johnson to take his place. Although Johnson tried to enact his own reform plans, The war in Vietnam was taking up to much of the governments time, effort, and money.
Civil Rights
The civil rights movement was nearing an end in the 1960's. With all that had taken place in the last few decades, there was not much left to do to hold other races back from their rights. The civil rights act was signed in 1964 abolishing discrimination. This sparked public outrage and soon led to the murder of Malcolm X in 1965 and Martin Luther King Jr in 1968,
"Hippies"
"hippies" were typically young people in the late fifties and sixties that were standing up against conformity. They believed that people should stick with what they believe and not worry about what others think. To be "hip" means to be up to date or sophisticated. "Hippies" were known for having long hair, wearing tie-dye t-shirts, bell-bottomed blue jeans, and going barefoot.
